EXCHANGE VISIT OF KHERSON YOUTH TO UZHHOROD IN THE FRAME OF THE COMPETITION “UZHHOROD – KHERSON: RETURNING OF THE PLASTICCHEW.”

  • December 27, 2022

On 9-11 December 2022 a team of youngsters (Zero waste school) from Kherson came with a visit to the laboratory of recycled plastic in Uzhhorod.

The team from Kherson has already obtained and successfully operated the Laboratory on the transformation of recycled plastic, which was purchased in the frame of the pilot project to reduce the marine litter in the structure of EMBLAS-Plus project.

A similar lab on the transformation of recycled plastic was opened in Uzhhorod with the support of the Coca-Cola Foundation.

What unites these two labs is the cartoon hero PlasticChew, created by the EMBLAS-Plus project to support youth involvement in sorting waste and giving a second life to plastic.

Unfortunately, the lab in Kherson is not functioning temporarily because of russian aggression. Meanwhile, the youth leaders decided to exchange their experience of what it is possible to do from recycled plastic.

At the same time, the Kherson and Uzhhorod kids helped to sort and register the HDPE plastic sent from all over Ukraine in the frame of our competition “Uzhhorod-Kherson: returning of the Plastic Chew”.

During three days, the kids and adults learned:

• How to sort the plastic properly;
• How to shredder it;
• How to mix the colors and create art elements;
• How to cut the different drawings in plastic.

After exchanging the experience and practical work on making art from recycled plastic, the whole team symbolically produced the plate “With love to Kherson,” which will be placed in the shopping mall in Kherson near the laboratory. It will symbolize not only the feelings of the kids towards their city but also advertise the opportunities recycled plastic provides as a material for art objects. In this way, it will raise public awareness of the need to sort the plastic and prevent the establishment of marine and river litter.

The action was hosted by the Zakarpattya Oblast Organization of All-Ukrainian Ecological League with the financial support of the EU-UNDP EU4EMBLAS project.
