The weekend school “The Black Sea mosaic” has continued with the lecture on the Black Sea molluscs

  • July 31, 2025

At the lecture the kids learned:

• How to distinguish between a rapana and a mussel

• Are there oysters in the Black Sea

• Which mollusks hunt which

• How octopus and squid are connected to the mussel?

• How to use I-Naturalist for mollusc identification?

The lecture was conducted by one of the best specialists, marine biologist Mykhaylo Son.

The kids were split in two age groups: 10-13, and 14-15.

After the lecture, kids jointly with Mykhaylo have identified the Black Sea shells which they brough with them.

As a home task, the kids need to prepare the Black Sea talisman from the shells with a story about which species of the molluscs they used.

A special youtube channel with the short lectures was created to support the kids who cannot attend lectures offline (find the playlist below).

The Black Sea weekend school contains in total of 8 interactive lectures and master classes on topics of marine biodiversity, marine litter, sustainable fashion, mine safety, underwater archaeology etc. The lectures are given by leading experts: biologists, oceanographers, underwater archaeologists, inventors, and others.

The lessons are held every two weeks, starting on 13 July 2025. A gala event is planned at the end to mark Black Sea Day (31 October 2025).

The school is organised with the support of the EU-UNDP project ‘European Union for Strengthening Environmental Protection’ jointly with the art space “Dialogues”.
