“The Globe of the Black Sea”: the exhibition of the different maps of the Black Sea done by kids travelled to Mykolaiv

  • February 12, 2024

On 10th of February 2024 Mykolaiv Theatre hosted the opening of the exhibition of maps “The Globe of the Black Sea”. In total, the exhibition included 31 works in two techniques – graphics and floristry. The topics were very diverse: from the geological history of the Black Sea, its colonisation, historically important trade routes, fish migration, important cetacean habitats, to marine litter pollution and much more.

This exhibition is the result of the school launched with the support of the EU-UNDP project EU4EMBLAS in December 2023. It lasted for three weeks in two cities at once – Odesa and Mykolaiv. Its goal was to bring children together to get new knowledge about the geography and biology of the Black Sea, to develop creativity and to act as art therapy, as well as to communicate in person. For two weeks this exhibition was presented in Odesa, where it got very positive feedback.

Now for 2 weeks it will be hosted by the Mykolaiv theatre.

The opening included not only discussion about the exceptional value of the maps produced, but also the Black Sea quest for all present kids. The tasks included:

• Mapping Black Sea neighbours of Ukraine;

• Master class how to deal with compass;

• Puzzle game about the dolphins;

• Game “Guess who is local?” about the invasive and native marine species;

• Action list what a person can do to protect the Black Sea

• Charity homework action to care about the Planet and to feed scared homeless animals.

Kids were very happy to play and to demonstrate and to gain some more knowledge about the Black Sea. In the action plan for the Black Sea, many of them wrote about the need of proper waste management and sorting, fish stocking, stopping war as it kills living creatures etc.

In the end, all the participants got presents which will help to reduce the plastic litter (durable water bottles, bags, sandwich boxes, durable cutlery, durable glasses etc.) They were very happy!

The culmination of the event was cutting a special “Black Sea globe” cake.

The exhibition is available to see for the next two weeks!
